The inability of Latex to recognize opening and closing quotes can be simply fixed in the software instead of requiring writers to write ” and ” unnaturally. Consider an editor/compiler broken if it doesn’t do so. Same with use of parenthesis. These problems have been solved in text editors since the 1980’s.
