Corinth: conflict and community

Shaftesbury Rd Family Camp, 26-28 February 2010

This is a study of the church at Corinth during the period when the apostle Paul visited them and wrote to them. I cover who they were and what was it like to be a believer in Corinth in the first few years after the church was formed. Particular issues include division and the Lord’s supper, chaos in the ecclesia, dealing with weak brethren, and Paul’s thorn in the flesh.

How Jewish mythology helps us understand the New Testament

The New Testament contains many allusions, and some direct quotations, of Jewish myths that circulated in the first century. In this talk (given at the Dandenong Bible Education Centre), I explore the most important examples thereby providing explanations of several otherwise puzzling passages. The talk covers demons, Beelzebul, Belial, Satan as an “angel of light”, the “angels that sinned”, and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Read the rest of this entry »

Community in Christ

In these talks I explore the world of the first century believers. Who were they, how did they interact with their fellow believers and with others? Where did they meet? What were their memorial meetings like? How did they organize themselves? In considering these questions, I attempt to reconstruct what it was like to be part of a first century ecclesia and compare it with our own 21st century experiences. Read the rest of this entry »

Jesus is for real!

These studies are all about showing Jesus as a real human being who we can learn from, and learn to be like. Sometimes he seems so different from us that we find it hard to relate to him. I hope we can come to see him as a man, struggling with the same issues that we face, and learning to live a godly life as we must do.

The talks have been given at:

  • Adelaide Youth Conference, January 2007.
  • New Zealand Christadelphian Bible School, January 2008.

The slides and MP3s from the Adelaide conference are given here. Read the rest of this entry »
